Pieter Van Tol is Of Counsel to Kauff Laton Miller LLP. Pieter is a trusted and seasoned advisor with more than thirty years of experience litigating major cases at leading global firms.
Pieter has acted as lead counsel, on behalf of cedents and reinsurers, in many of the seminal cases in insurance and reinsurance. He is recognized in multiple directories as one of the top practitioners in the insurance and reinsurance industry. Pieter has also provided advice to both insureds and insurers in a wide variety of coverage contexts, including property and casualty matters, aviation insurance, subrogation, and directors and officers’ insurance (recovery and defense).
Pieter has broad experience in general litigation and arbitration, acting as lead counsel in several jury and bench trials as well as numerous arbitrations. These disputes involved the information management, financial services, telecommunications, mortgage, real estate, chemical, automotive, metals, and energy industries in the U.S. and throughout the world, including Russia, Ukraine, Germany, France, Britain, China, Indonesia, and Canada.
In addition, since 1996, Pieter has successfully litigated bankruptcy issues in courts across the country on behalf of debtors, creditors, creditors’ committees, litigation trustees, insureds, and insurers.
Following graduation from law school in 1994, Pieter was an associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and became a partner at Hogan Lovells US LLP (then Lovells LLP) in 2005. Prior to law school, Pieter was in the European History Ph.D. program at Columbia University, and he received his M.A. in 1988.
